The village belongs to a fertile agricultural area with several active farmers.

The village has a pre-school with two departments. The school in the village has 6 years old to middle school. The secondary school is located in Boden and is accessible to students by bus.

In winter, there are fine snowmobile trails and a snowmobile cabin open to the public. There is also a nice floodlit trail with ski trails in winter, a football pitch and a swimming area with a sauna that can be booked. UIF (Unbyn’s sports association) is mainly active in football and has several talented women’s and men’s teams. There is also an active skiing section that trains everything from our youngest abilities to keen exercisers. The section organizes the KM in skiing every year. UIF has a good cooperation with the neighboring village of Avan, which also offers sports such as basketball and hockey.

The gymnasium is the venue for pub nights and communal activities for the village. You can also rent the premises for your own events. There is a fully equipped kitchen.

Today, about 650 people live in the village.

Avan is located on the south side of the Lule River between Luleå and Boden along road 616.

You can get to and from Avan by ferry (or ice road in winter) from Södra Sunderbyn. The village is located in the scenic landscape with proximity to water and forest. Avan has a pre-school and primary school (F-6). In Avan there is local involvement and an active association life that contributes to increased community and activities.
