Haymaking in Avan August 10

Höslaget is Avans’ annual harvest market organized on the second Saturday in August with a focus on local food and crafts. Avan is a village of about 400 inhabitants located on a ridge on the southern bank of the Lule River, surrounded by a vast agricultural landscape shaped by hundreds of years of human presence. The haymaking event lasts one day (10/8, 11am-3pm) and usually attracts thousands of visitors from near and far. The aim of Höslaget is to promote the traditional foods and crafts of the region and to showcase a vibrant and viable countryside.

In addition to the market, there is a wide range of activities for children and adults. At Avangården (Jahansvägen 777) you can pet the sheep and shop in the farm shop. In Lindström’s bakery at Avans school, flatbread is baked in the traditional way. “Buskspel i Norr” is a fiddlers’ meeting for skilled fiddlers from all over the country who together create sweet music in the Norrbotten farm Nykall on Avans byaväg 32. Motor enthusiasts can visit exhibitions of vintage cars, tractors and other types of antique machinery. The Children’s Hay Camp offers activities that appeal to younger visitors, such as pony rides, hay jumping, giant soap bubbles, face painting and a children’s flea market. To fill the stomachs of visitors to Höslagen, there are several food carts in the market area. The line is usually particularly long for the halved Baltic herring, the suo mashed potatoes and Avangården’s delicate lamb rolls. At Avans summer café in Föreningshuset, you can then enjoy homemade coffee bread.
